What Causes TMJ Problems?
TMJ disorders happen when the jaw joint with its articular disc or the muscles around it don’t work as smoothly as they should. There isn’t always one single cause, but several common factors can play a role:
- Jaw injury – accidents or trauma can injury the TMJ soft tissues, cause inflammation and change how the joint moves.
- Everyday habits – chewing gum, biting nails, sleeping positions or other repetitive actions can add TMJ stress that leads to disfunction.
